Notes

It's entirely plausible that there are one or more errors of attribution or omission to the instruments listed above for the performers. And if I'd been more astute, I would be more sure about who did which solo, but for now, take the citations above as reasonably reliable guesses!

Night three of this year's PIVOT Festival was one of those shows where my expectations and lack of listener prep ended up getting in the way of my enjoyment. Having read a bunch of promo material, I was fairly hyped up about hearing and seeing this show. But having only briefly sampled the official film anthology, I was surprised by how many times during the event that I felt like 'okay, I've had enough of that, let's move on'… I really like drumming, but it was too much of a good thing for me last night: my enjoyment might even have been higher with a truncated performance.

Program Notes or program notes

Lily O'Brien posted a nifty promo article about this year's PIVOT Festival with SFCV.

Lisa Hirsch posted a superficial review of this year's PIVOT Festival offerings.

Joshua Kosman chimed in with a partial review on his blog: apparently he heard enough, and stepped out early in order to attend the late-starting SFS SoundBox gig down the street. Maybe not such a bad idea, especially when you recognize you've reached the limit of your appreciation!

There are many videos of performances of this work. The group posted an official 'film anthology' of the work on YouTube that features great visuals. If you prefer something more traditional, here's a single cam live shot of Sandbox at the Vale of Glamorgan Festival in Wales, 9/30/2022

Finally, Gabriel Kahane made a follow-up post about this year's PIVOT Festival on his blog.
