This year's Kodo performance was darn fun. The group has really widened their repertoire over time, and the inclusion of steel pan, singing and koto helped broaden the tonal range of the evening. I also enjoyed the choreography of the performance, even though I couldn't always make sense out of it. The first work of the night, Koe, was particularly delightful, featuring three of the ensemble performers doing a “deer dance” while wearing extremely tall (12'?) bamboo brushes that they waved and slapped rhythmically against the ground.
