Notes

We arrive kinda late (~7:40 PM against ~7:15 actual start?) on account of the DNB runover and transition drive. Oh well, sometimes you miss out on a little fun! I should have paid more attention to what was playing when we got out of the car, but navigating the first ten minutes of entry and greetings and finding a spot to dance distracted me from my note-taking task. Should I try to be even more obsessive about note-taking in the future? Hard to say!!

As we walk in, I notice that there's only one backup singer tonight: Halina Janusz is absent while recovering from knee surgery. Hopefully she'll be better soon!

Tonight's party seems a little less crowded than last year's iteration. Maybe the club is paying more attention to capacity enforcement? I'm happy that there's space to move and shake our bones, and extra happy to see so many friends present.

The set-ending jam out of Lay Down Sally was especially interesting for featuring an unusual call-and-response interaction between Garrett & Danny: Garrett had been playing in a formless, 'spacey' fashion, when Danny began repeating insistent riffs from Slipknot!. Rather than joining in, Garrett answered with a complementary ascending riff on Eleanor Rigby. It was quite interesting hearing the two lines juxtaposed against each other: they meshed really well! I don't recall hearing Jon or Son join this particular conversation – they were instead comping in a more open fashion that didn't commit to either of the new tunes – and after a few minutes, the performance coalesced back onto Lay Down Sally to conclude the first part of the night's festivities. Whew! Time to get some fresh air!!

Set two was one high point after another for me: I just love the JGB repertoire that this band mines. I was surprised to hear Chuck Berry's C'est la Vie (You Never Can Tell) – in an interesting sync, I'd listened to an excellent piano-centric cover by John Magnie just this morning.

The show wrapped up a little early, but then, it was Sunday night, so maybe that was the proper choice: I know I was glad to be home before midnight!
