Like night one, tonight's Mahalo Dead experience commenced with an unannounced mini-set from Reed Mathis, Adam MacDougall, and Jason Hann. Reed was very enthusiastic, and I really enjoyed his closing tune, the Ladder.

The vibe from the crowd was a bit more relaxed tonight – opening night jitters out of the way? – and I was really happy that we were able to snag the same 2nd row center spot. Good people around us too! The first set was really fun: just long enough to get us all worked up and wanting more when they declared it was break time. Aw heck! I skipped over to the food pop-up and bought us dinner: jerk chicken for T!ng, and a fiery vegetarian green curry for me. Yum!!

I applaud the notion to include less common tunes in the setlist, but to my ears, Just a Little Light was an under-rehearsed wreck. Good thing deadheads are a tolerant bunch! The next half hour was moderately interesting, but things lurched sideways with Me & Bobby McGee – it seemed to me that Kanika's grasp of the melody was pretty uncertain. Another case where more rehearsal really would have helped! She put a much stronger effort into Ramble on Rose, but at that point, Billy decided that he was done, and despite the crowd's clamoring for more, all we got was a “come back tomorrow.” Harumph!
