Notes

One thing that confuses me about the titling of the works performed tonight is the unannotated switching between English, French, and Spanish, and the variations in standard such as title formats and use of accents when writing in one language versus another. I suppose that's another sign that I'm just an under-educated American rube.

Regardless, it was impressive to see that Savall could fill a considerable fraction of Zellerbach Hall – who would think that programming a concert of 500-year old music would draw such a crowd? And to their credit, most of the audience were very well behaved listeners: I think I only heard one cell phone ring the entire night.

It's always a joy to see Jordi Savall bring a new program to town (celebrating his 50th anniversary of touring this year!), and I'm really glad that I made the effort to see this one: he's a little slower at 83 than he used to be, but he can still fiddle away like a demon on his tiny viol.

Nicholas Jones posted a cursory review of the show with SFCV, but failed to identify the encore pieces. And while the article included several photos, NONE were from tonight's performance: HARUMPH!!
