Notes
George Houston was a tolerable opener, and it was refreshing that the crowd was willing to listen to him rather than yapping amongst themselves. I was kinda flummoxed identifying the mildly sacrilegious second tune of his set, but he's subsequently released it as a single, Jesus Freaks \(Live at the Fillmore\). Thanks George!
I was first introduced to Paul Weller upon being gifted a cassette tape compilation of the Jam's In the City and Sound Affects albums in 1981. I dug it! But that was too late to catch them live: their last CA gig was in the spring of 1980. Style Council didn't really float my boat, so I lost track of Weller until he showed up Yep Roc! with the amazing As Is Now in 2005. Listening to that release watered the seed of desire that I ought to go see him, but his visits to NorCal haven't been particularly frequent, and for years and years, he'd announce tours that skipped us or landed on a date that conflicted with some other show. What with the pandemic and parade of regrets over those misses, when Weller announced a return to the Fillmore (first time in Norcal since 2017), I jumped on it. Let's rock!
Tonight's show was a heaping portion of hits. Although the setlist mostly pulled from Weller's last half-dozen solo albums, he also included several gems from his recordings with the Style Council and the Jam. Given that his 2024 tour statistics show a rotation of fifty-something tunes, I was kind of surprised to see that tonight's gig mirrored the previous night except for the penultimate tune of the night: we got 1995's pensive You Do Something to Me, while last night got Start! from that Sound Affects album I first heard so long ago. Heck! Missed it by that much!! Ah well, I'm glad with my choice to attend only one night (there were LOTS of out-of-town rail folks who were there both nights) – I would have felt really let down to hear the same show two nights in a row.
