Notes

Today's sets from Stu and Phil celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Grateful Dead's 7/21/1974 gig at the Hollywood Bowl. Looks to me as if there are six (!?) iterations of a single audience recording for that one available for your listening pleasure on the Live Music Archive. A non-dead hea might squint at that and wonder about the fuss, but 1974 was a peak year for the band, and this date falls smack dab in the middle of their 'Wall of Sound' period, so an audience recording has the potential to sound 'just exactly perfect' as a certain guitarist might say. I appreciate that the homage wasn't too strict: the first five tunes here were all played on that 1974 date, but not in this order, nor even in the same set.

Of course Terrapin Station didn't appear until 1977, and at a glance, they never played that one on July 21 (thanks to the folks at Grateful Stats for helping me verify that tidbit). Today's version was a treat because Stu and pals played an extended version of the suite, somewhat like the album version (or maybe 10/18/77? I'll need to do a bit of extended listening to follow up on that notion later). Snazzy! As you might guess, the hometown crowd was happy to lap this up like alley cats on spilled cream. Yum!

Oren Levy posted this set to the Live Music Archive too. Give it a listen!
