Tonight was the first show on the current tour, and Renee Rosnes birthday too! Presumably we got a good taste of their forthcoming album, but only Lights Away From Home and Balance of Time were identified as pieces from that collection. Gotta wait until May to find out if anything else is a new album cut.
The band seemed well-rehearsed: for an initial gig, I didn't notice any goofs whatsoever. That makes them professionals, right?
I really liked Galapagos – it had a great, spacey vibe that really set the tone: we're gonna take you out of your heads! Likewise, Alexa Taratino's Whirlwind shared that sort of vibe, with lots of fluttery microtonal flute. Hackensack featured an unusual arrangement that careened all over the place, like Mister Magoo out for a Saturday pleasure drive.
And closing with two Wayne Shorter compositions? Very nice!
Big thanks to Ting for the photo gallery!
Whoa! This section is incomplete for now, sorry!
