I thought Stanley played with lots more dissonance tonight than my recollection from times past: less emphasis on crystalline tapping in traditional major and minor keys and more time cascading through strange arpeggiated runs of weird harmonics. Tough enough listening that I found it hard to stay engaged at times; maybe I was just too tired.
Although he first worked it up four or five years ago, I hadn't heard Sounds of the Elements before. Stanley played us Hydrogen through Scandium (first 21 elements), with a bonus jam tagged on at the end. Kinda cool!
Given Stanley's classical studies, it's entirely possible that the 'preamble' to Eleanor Rigby was a prelude-like free improv, but I suppose it's just as likely to be one more regular tune of his that I couldn't identify. And on that front, I was pretty sure that the first 'episode' after Eleanor Rigby was an entirely new tune, but after awhile Stanley mutated it into a Hendrix-like meltdown. Just when I thought that was done, he cleaned up his tone and returned to Eleanor Rigby, whew! So maybe a medley, or maybe just a wild musical journey.
Whoa! This section is incomplete for now, sorry!
Big thanks to Ting for the photo gallery!
