Notes

Monsieur Periné certainly knows how to get a party going: the dance floor tonight was packed! No wonder SFJAZZ hired extra security to try and reduce crowding in front. Too bad they turned out to be assholes.

While my enthusiasm for the show is tempered by distaste for the fast 4/4 disco beat that underpinned some of the tunes, I really liked the variety of grooves that got layered in. Some (many?) of the tunes seemed to include playback (mostly keyboard or synth sounds that I couldn't associate visually to any of the players), and while it was easy to see that the bass player was working hard, the overall bass tone was really murky, with very little of the pop or pluck that I expected to hear accompanying the playing I watched. Weird!

I was a little bummed that tonight's show was 20-25 min shorter than the Friday night show that was streamed live – maybe the band was run down from the late night festivities of New Year's Eve? Ah well, I'm grateful for what I got, and happy to have started 2023 with a first night event. Hopefully the rest of the year turns out to be even more fun!
