Notes

I'm reasonably sure that tonight was the premiere performance for this year's collective, and while they were certainly psyched to be playing for us, I think I'd have preferred to hear them once they had a tour's worth of performances behind them. I didn't detect any mistakes or clunkers, but the overall vibe of the night seemed slightly tentative. Give 'em more practice and they'll be scorching their way through the show, but tonight didn't really seem to move past a simmer more than a few times.

I liked the setlist – both the new tunes and the covers – and while the latter suffered a little bit from the “unnecessarily rearranged” syndrome that has been pretty constant across all iterations of the collective, the classics are still cool to hear with new dressing for a change.

Hopefully they'll pull more of a turnout tomorrow and this weekend: locals gotta support!!

Richard Scheinin posted a terrific promo article about the current SFJAZZ Collective's new repertoire.

Andrew Gilbert posted a similar promo article with the SF Chronicle.
