[7:33 PM] {lights down; greetings and announcements by Randall Kline; band out; Branford rambles awhile}
For all Branford's self-deprecation, I thought tonight's gig was great: the group might not have played together much in the past 18 months, but they sounded great to me! My only complaint would be that the show leaned heavily on the same tunes I heard them playing in 2019: maybe that was just my bad luck, but given that this band has been together over 20 years, I kind of expected they'd be drawing from a bigger song-bag. Looking at things another way, the show was made up of three tunes from latest album, The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul, one from 2012's Four MFs Playin' Tunes, one from 1999's Requiem, and two traditional tunes: maybe I'm whining too much!
I'm guessing that Steve Wilson is the guy who sat in first during the encore tonight. Branford introduced him as “Teddy Wilson”, which seems very likely wrong (famous pianist, died 1986?, Nah!). Andrew Speight is definitely correct for the 2nd guest, on alto saxophone.
Whoa! This section is incomplete for now, sorry!
Joshua Rotter promoed the show for the Examiner.
Big thanks to Ting for the photo gallery!
