Notes

  • Slow to rally today, heading off to the show by car share a little after 3 PM
  • [3:28 PM] seated in line, exactly the same distance as yesterday, but at the moment everyone is seated. Time to chill for a few hours.
  • [4:10 PM] line is starting to pack in with wedgers, so we scrunch up a little bit. Every inch is precious, yeah?
  • [4:30 PM] after the big crunch. I'm now about 15' back from the detectors, but with many people squished into that space. We are all too eager.
  • I stand for 30 min, listening to the many buzzing conversations, but mostly set apart by my solitary status, as Ting has left me to be the mule and split over to run the race-inside-unencumbered line.
  • [5 PM] and they start letting us in right on time. Left lines bag clog immediately (just like yesterday!), so I split right and pop through without too much trouble. Scanned, then banded, and soon race walking up the steps, around the concourse, down the steps to the field, around the back, and then way way way up front. Running solo without gear, Ting has beaten me inside today, and found a good spot for us on the Mayer/Chimenti divide, about 20 feet back, pretty much like last night. Good enough for me!
  • [5:15 PM] getting broiled. Time to put my back to the sun.
  • [6-ish] I go on a shade-seeking ramble. Mission easily accomplished, as the sun has dropped enough to send long shadows from the fieldhouse across much of the floor. Having dispensed a couple hundred NTTH stickers, I complete my circle and settle back down to resume waiting for the show to begin. Patience grasshopper!
  • [6:56 PM] the natives are starting to get restless, but there haven't been any audio cues to indicate that it's time yet. So we sit and wait. Chit chat. Be.
  • [7:07 PM] the crowd howls with impatience at every band member sighting, but it still isn't time yet. Funny how that works.
  • Once onstage, the band begins noodling ambiguously, stimulating the crowd to toss guesses back and forth. Lots of wrong ideas are battered around before the obvious becomes clear. Good job guys!
  • [7:16 PM] we're only a little off center – less than 10 feet, but the sound is oddly lop-sided towards the Stage Right PA: not enough inward cant to the hanging stacks to give us good stereo. Drat! Yet another sign that the good old days are past and gone.
  • Follow-up from set break: left to itself, my brain quickly learns to forgive the odd sound, and I enjoy the show without additional distraction.
  • The weather tonight is perfect. Not hot. Not cold. NOT RAINING!
  • Bird Song is really excellent tonight, and the band actually manages to make a complete segue into New Speedway Boogie instead of letting Weir drag things crash-bang into the next lane… Thanks guys!
  • Set two is really solid. No complaints!
  • Wait, gotta pick a nit: what's with repeating NFA two nights in a row? Yesterday's rainout opener doesn't count?
  • The three-song encore seems generous, even if they stop playing a little earlier than last night.
  • So glad we made it! Sign me up for the same spot next year, OK?
