Although I was really looking forward to this show in the days that led up to it, and I was psyched enough to head down to Freight an hour before door time in order to ensure we could get primo seats, once the show was happening, it didn't quite meet my expectations. I think part of it must have been my mood that night: too tired to be enthusiastic!

I'm sure that part of the issue is the somewhat open and formless nature of the performance: it was so easy for me to drift away in reverie that I didn't end up latching onto any strong feelings about the event. It happened. I was there. So What?

Audfellow named the encore as Hard Times (Come Again No More), and while I agree that the final cornet tag before the very end sounded a lot like Stephen Foster's classic, the preceding six or seven minutes sounded totally different: I didn't hear the usual “hard time, hard times, come again no more” refrain at any point before the final 20 seconds. A good conundrum for us to work out!
