Notes

Hot damn, what a show! Lordy! Chick is still killing it at 77.

I was especially impressed with Zyrab: it's incredibly hard to play flamenco on the piano, but Chick made it look easy.

I was also really psyched to hear his interpretation of Scarlatti: having studied a few of his five hundred-odd sonatas, I'm always interested in hearing how others interpret his works. In this case, Chick started out solo in a fairly jazzy, impressionistic mode, then shifted into a pretty straightforward interpretation – only the latter section was augmented by the accompaniment of Marcus & Carlitos. Way cool! I'm guessing the Scarlatti work matches that given for one of Chick's sets last week in Boston, as posted in a thorough review by Steve Elman for ArtFuse.

Having Alfredo Rodriguez join Chick during the Encore for a four hands at the same piano version of Spain was a super-exciting treat.
