[8:06 PM lights down, announcements, band out]
[8:45 PM lights down, SG out alone, playing a Saxello, a ?Conn-o-sax, or a Stritch (straight alto saxophone), joined by Ry on a Gibson hollow body guitar + ceramic slide after about 30 seconds]
Drove up a bit early in order to walk around town. Ended up spending way too much money on dinner at OxBow Public Market, mainly because the oysters from Hog Island were both damn expensive and darn tiny, but also because we finished that “opener” and then decided we were still hungry enough to visit one of the other stalls. And of course, I had to have a pint of Morning Time Coffee Breakfast Stout at Fieldwork to perk me up…
Just as at Friday's GAMH gig, the crowd was surprisingly respectful of Robert Francis' opening set. And happily, most of it was different. I got the impression that he was more comfortable tonight … maybe that was due to the wine backstage? Anyways, he commented before the last tune that it was dedicated to his dad (or had something to do with their relationship, and his dad's recent death), but despite that tip, I couldn't identify it, so instead, there's just a slip of lyric posted up there for now.
Sound in the Uptown was really quite good, especially when there were only a few musicians playing. Once the whole band got to cooking along, things might have been a little muddier, but I have nothing to really complain about except for audience idiots who insist on clapping along with every song.
Very slightly different stories tonight than Friday.
Same setlist except one omission at the end, perhaps cut to meet a Sunday curfew? Easy for me to imagine that the Napa crew wants to roll up the streets late at night!
Because we were sitting way up in the back of the hall, I couldn't really see all that great, so I'm guessing that Sam opened with the same strange sax, and I didn't really bother trying to keep track of which instrument he played throughout the rest of the night. Lazy old me!
When I was paying attention, it seemed as if Ry was using the same guitars; really, the only difference in that respect from Friday was his use of a ceramic slide instead of glass – the happy result of a gift backstage before the show. Not sure if I'd have known the difference by listening without Ry telling us, but the visual was obvious enough once he drew attention to the change.
Big thanks to Ting for the photo gallery!
Whoa! This section is incomplete for now, sorry!
