Tonight's show was another good 'un! I've enjoyed seeing Catherine Russell several times over the past few years, and tonight was no exception: she made Miner Auditorium seem like a small cabaret hall. Starting off with an upbeat rendition of Louis Jordan's 1946 party tune, Let the Good Times Roll was a fine choice: everyone knew that tonight was going to be a hot one!
Of course it helps that she has a crack band behind her. All of the guys are sharp, but Matt Munisteri and Mark Shane deserve special mention for the blistering runs they laid down on the faster tunes. It might have been more fun if the set included more of those upbeat numbers, but I can understand that the musician's hands and fingers (not to mention lungs!) might need a break. And I'm not complaining that the night included plenty of slower tunes, only registering my preference for a Saturday night set.
Like usual, it's entirely possible that I've misidentified a tune or two … when my notes consist of lyric fragments that get looked up online, it's easy for me to get mixed up and pick the wrong choice from some overworked phrase that caught my ear at the time that I was trying to make an identification.
Anyways, I'm going to select Wynonie Harris' Quiet Whiskey as my favorite from the show – another hoppin' party tune, for sure!
