Simon McBurney's the Encounter, an aurally-centric retelling of the epic (and somewhat unbelievable) adventure of National Geographic photographer Loren McIntyre's experience among the indigenous people of Brazil's Javari Valley is one of the best plays I've seen in long time.
Highly highly highly recommended.
As another friend put it, this play succeeds because it operates on many different levels simultaneously. Kind of like the Sargasso Manuscript, Time Bandits or Cloud Atlas, if you want a film reference. Or an E.T.A. Hoffmann tale if you're more inclined to the literary side of things.
And since it's a head-focused production, there's no need to buy an expensive seat. I sat on the side in the very last row of the theater, and felt like I fully enjoyed the production. If you've ever enjoyed listening to Firesign Theatre on headphones in the dark, you'll have a vague idea of what this show is like. One-man radio theater for the present day.
