The New Orleans Radiators

Once a year, the faithful fishheads return to Tipitina's in the dead of winter, drawn by the promise of mild weather at the mouth of the mighty Mississippi River and a chance to experience the ecstasy of communal bacchanalia generated by the New Orleans Radiators. This year's festivities got started off with a short set from the Colin Lake Duo. Given that the house was still pretty loose, and that Colin peppered his set with a familiar bunch of covers, this made for a nice way to get folks swaying and dancing. In case you're wondering, I Am the Light of the World is not quite the same as the Reverend Gary Davis tune popularized by Jorma Kaukonen – the words (and music) were just a leetle bit deeferent. I didn't find any plausible alternates while poking around on the intertubes, so I'm just gonna assume Colin learned it by folk-hand-me-down fashion from someone who knew the same underlying tune as Gary Davis dressed up and copyrighted in the early 1960's. The title above is taken from sneaking a peak at the setlist on the floor in front of Myles (without that, I would have “this”-d it, like Gary Davis done). By the end of the set, the crowd had gotten a little rowdy, but Colin managed the situation with grace – I'd definitely go see him again if I get the chance!

Soon enough it's 11:11 PM and the boys are stoking the engine good! As best as I can tell, the band is rolling through the music of Blind WIllie Johnson's Everybody Ought to Treat a Stranger Right, but Zeke is singing the lyrics to Bob Dylan's Highway 61. Hell yeah! They're trying to blow our minds, right here at the start of the weekend! The rest of the show is solidly played. Hard to imagine that these guy's haven't been playing together regularly, but I guess the psychic connection from thirty years of playing together can withstand a few year's vacation!
