[8:01 PM; Waitin for the gig to get going … big Steve raps about weed]
[Moonalice takes the stage with Jason Crosby at the keyboards while Wavy Gravy yacks]
Tonight's party may have been slightly more tame, and the turnout was clearly a bit lower than than prior years, but I had a grand time nonetheless. The opening set from Doobie Decibel System was plenty fun, my favorite being the exquisite cover of George Harrison's Beware of Darkness; good advice in those lyrics, no?
Wavy Gravy and Big Steve regaled us with tall tales over the brief set break, then Moonalice blazed through two and a half hours of fine rock and roll. I might have been tired from the long day's work, but with John Molo laying down that boppity beat, I just had to kick up my heels and dance. Pete and Roger and Jason all took turns at the bass while swapping places at the lead vocal or keyboards, but no matter who was leading, Barry Sless was slinging lightning shots from his guitar. Lord that boy can play! High Five and Let It Rain were my favorites tonight. Good times all around!
Being a work night, I'd assumed that things would wrap up reasonably early, and I suppose that's true, as the Encore break happened just shy of midnight. Funny how what used to be early – a show ending before midnight? Dang! – is now a blessing (least that's what the ache in my bones tells me). The band gave us a healthy 30-minute encore, after which we bid adieu to our friends, queued up for our poster packs (thanks Roger!) and then shuffled off into the fog to find our car and drive home.
If you're curious about the posters, head on over to the Moonalice website, who knows, you might see something that would look good hanging on your wall!
There were a couple tunes I couldn't identify in the DDS set. I'm pretty darn sure that Toys wasn't the Aerosmith tune of the same name, since this one was pretty mellow. And I'll hazard a guess that the following tune is a Lebo original, since I couldn't seem to find it connected to ALO. Maybe someday I'll get them figured out! Anyways, in the meantime you can try to ID them yourself by listening to the Moonalice media archive for tonight's show. And big thanks to the folks who posted the Moonalice portion to Setlist.fm – makes it easier for me to double-check that I've gotten things right in my notes!
