Notes

Tonight's revelers found the weather to be mild and calm – just exactly perfect for resuming the appointed festivities! We arrived a trifle early, grabbed a parking spot on Tchoupitoulas across from the entrance, then picked up our tickets from will call and joined the line, waiting briefly before passing the threshold and establishing claim to a front and center spot on the floor. I was expecting a big step up in crazy enthusiasm tonight (Friday energy vs Thu, of course!), and Jeff Matthews supplied a major helping in that respect, jumping and raving all night long from his rail spot in front of Dave. Ting might have been mildly annoyed – hard to shoot good pics when you're being blocked by a whirlwind of arms – but I was happy to have him there to remind the band how much we love them and what they do!

The openers, Marc Stone and Josh Paxton, treated us to a respectable set of tunes. They started with a passel of originals, the dropped a choice pair of covers to try and shush the noisy crowd. I'd say the tactic worked on the fraction of folks who were inclined to listen!

Half an hour later it was time to bring on the noise, and the crowd roared in glee as the boys made their hellos, the dropped into Love Grows on Ya. Oh baby, ain't that right! And the rest of the set poured out on us like fine wine from a well-cellared bottle. Hard to resist drinking deeply, even when you get to the dregs!

The hit parade continued unabated into the second set. Wild and Free? Oh yeah I'm positively lit to be here with you! And Chainsaw? Fire 'em up! Hard to imagine having much more fun than this, but knowing that the band had to save their magic for one more show, they wrapped it all up and tucked it away in a Trick Bag to save a little for tomorrow. I'm good with that – one of the merits of old age (hah!) is feeling better able to keep everything in perspective. Gotta keep it all on an even keel, right?

Well then, let's head on to the trifecta's finale!
