Notes

Arrived at the venue via side roads to find easy parking (thanks for driving Ger)! We joined the very long line of folks waiting to get in after sussing out that the two entrances visible appeared to offer similar blockage. Waited a lot and weaseled a little, then finessed the search at the door. We walk in and are immediately greeted by Lee and Beth. Good timing there! Promptly separated by the wrist band line… I'd hope to see them in our center spot later on, but I guess they went to their preferred home base instead.

After the first set last night, my summary was “meh, too slow” – and the second set was heavy-footed as well. On the other hand, the song selection was pretty good, so I'm glad to have been there. Ger told me that he thought it was Bobby keeping the tempos slow (instead of the drummers), and related to that, I thought last night drums gave off a sparkly, magical energy that was woefully lacking for much of the rest of the show. Not that it was bad, just that Mickey and Billy really perked up for that segment, and everything else all night just dragged along (even the tunes that should have been bouncy and perky, like Franklin's, Good Lovin' and Touch).

At this point, I feel like I'm standing around a campfire after an all-night trip. What was once a raging party around a bonfire has transitioned to a time of quiet reflection, hypnotized by the embers. Every now and then someone or something stirs up the fire and there's an interesting flare up, but soon enough we're back to the warm glow of reminiscence. Cozy is good, but not necessarily very exciting.

The crowd around us was pretty mellow except for the folks spilling beer (all around), or passing out (two) and vomiting (just one). Tons of newbies around us. Interesting to watch them react to the show experience, and fun to talk to them during the breaks. I'm glad I'm going back tonight, looking forward to hearing a completely different setlist!

Haven’t read enough yet? Candace Horgan posted a review of the show for Hey Reverb and the Denver Post.
