Having seen and heard Steve Coleman occasionally over the years, I knew what to expect going into tonight's show, but somehow I expected that the weekend's theme – celebrating the 50th Anniversary of John Coltrane's A Love Supreme – would draw out something different from Steve and his group. And saddled with that baggage, I found myself somewhat disappointed. And it's not because there was anything wrong with the gig – Steve was playing in the same m-base style he's been developing ove the past 30+ years – but I wasn't in the right mood to really listen to it, so the night was not as rewarding for me as it could have been.

Ting thought it was righteously groovy, and teased me about being a grumpy listener. Guilty as charged! Hopefully I'll enjoy a better experience next time out….
