Notes

Easy drive over on the tail end of tonight's commute, just as this week's apocalyptic storm begins to blow in. Hooray, rain is coming! Given how insanely crowded it was when we saw Jackie here about a year ago, I was more than a little surprised to see how few people were present for the opening set from David Gans and Jacob Groopman. It was actually quite nice for the first ten or twenty minutes – until the stragglers started to trickle in and commence talking over the music. I tried moving about a little – left, right, closer to the PA, farther from the rangers, but eventually kind of have up. There's little you can do to defeat the murmur of a Sweetwater crowd – ask Weir! Jackie surprised us by popping out at the end of the opener to drop some rocking keyboard runs into Gans' River and Drown. Yay! Good to be surprised sometimes.

I was even more surprised when Jackie and Nate began their set less than ten minutes after the opener ended. Seemed lightning quick to me! The acoustic duo set was fun, and for the most part, the audience was better behaved for this party of the show than they were for the opener. I particularly appreciated that the set was changed up quite a bit from the last time we saw the full, over at the Swedish-American Hall in San Francisco af few years ago.

Talking with Jason after the show, he mentioned that the original plan was for him to sit in for the entire set, but that his gig in SF with DDS and Assembly of Dust ran about an hour later than originally scheduled, so he only made it for the encore. And the last-minute Inclusion of Alex for the encore was stimulated by Ting asking Jackie, “What about Alex?,” as Jackie invited Jason to join him onstage.
