[1:16 PM lights down, announcements by Paul Mann; dead air for a few min]
According to our emcee, if you start off with a big twang, the next step is go wayback, so that's what we got. Waybacks were in fine form today, and offered us a fine set mixing covers and their own repertoire under the broiling sun. Did I mention yet that this was the hottest HSB weekend ever? Weather-wise, that is. Absolutely scorching! Shockingly hot for fall in San Francisco. Good thing I was forewarned and wore the Golite sunarmor to keep covered (if not cool).
So the Waybacks were fun, but what really surprised me was when James Nash hit those ringing notes to signal the start of St. Stephen. Ain't nothing better than a fat hit of the Grateful Dead out in Golden Gate Park! Oh boy! I was dancing hard despite the heat, and dripping with sweat by the time the tune ended. Makes me sad that I neglected to go see Joe Russo's Almost Dead over at the Arrow Stage (archive streams here or here), but even happier that I got to see them through down for a full show over at Terrapin on Monday night!
Thanks to the folks posting at setlist.fm for the help confirming some of my guesses at song titles!
