(sorry, nothing to declare, we missed 'em!)
(hoped to have arrived in time for Reed's set, but that just didn't work out … we ended up walking in just a few minutes before Stu's set began)

It was another typically foggy day in McLaren Park as we celebrated Jerry Garcia's Birthday with a healthy crowd of freaks! Sunday slow to rise kept us from arriving before the midpoint of the schedule, but it was still a plentiful helping of music.
Stu Allen and friends were in fine form today, whipping the crowd into a frenzy as the sun played peek-a-boo through the tendrils of fog. My favorites were Doing That Rag, Alligator and the Other One suite.
The closing set from Melvin Seals started with a pretty festive version of Stevie Wonder's Birthday, which abuptly segued into a few lines of Shakedown Street, and then just as abruptly shifted into the close of Expressway to Your Heart. Must have made sense to Melvin, but to me those transitions came off as rather brusque and under-rehearsed. The rest of the set was solid, but uneventful – my favorites were Johnny Too Bad and Mystery Train, though I should add that the ultimate pairing, My Sisters and Brothers _ » _Ride Mighty High, was also pretty darn awesome. Best of all was to be grooving outdoors on a splendidly cool Sunday afternoon!
