We started the night with wine and conversation in my mom's living room in the Marina before heading over to Greens Restaurant for a fabulous vegetarian dinner. I was particularly happy with my Winter Lasagna entrée – non-vegan, as it had a bit of baked mozzarella on top, but pasta and tomato-free, as it was based instead on squash and root vegetables. Yum! Ting's choice of wild mushroom risotto was also very tasty, but I thought the buttery sauce came on a little too strong. Anyways, enough with the food review, on to the event at hand!
WOW, what a trippy play!
I really liked the way it developed – moving here and there in a somewhat nonlinear fashion, switching back and forth between English and Spanish dialogue. Makes me realize how crappy my ability to understand Spanish is!
Sean San José was particularly engaging – rubber-faced and funny when the scene called for him to be comic, dark and brooding when it was time for drama. He was good in Brujo, my favorite play from last season, but he was great tonight.
I'll spare you further remarks in order not to spoil any of the dramatic surprises, but I'll conclude by adding that this was my favorite play from our past three or four seasons of visiting Magic Theatre.
Tempted, but want to know a little more? You might try reading Chad Jones' promo or Robert Hurwitt's review from SFGate
