Notes

7:45 PM and we're out in front of Tipitina's, waiting in the drizzle for our 9 PM door time: crazy, huh? The things we'll do to get a good spot for the show! I'm happy to have a dry spot to sit, protected by a metal canopy overhead. Line stays pretty sparse until 8:30 when we get a couple cars making drop offs all at once. Good to have more people: makes it seem warmer. 9 PM comes, and despite losing 6-8 places to phantoms showing up to claim a front-of-line entry spot, we clear the entry gate and attain our coveted just-off-the-rail position in front of Dave's mic: perfect for balancing guitar blast from the stage with the overall mix from the PA hanging above the outside edges of the stage. Seems like it's pretty much exactly the same rail crew as the previous nights: these folks are hooked!

The audience is slower to show up tonight, and the crowd is only 4-5 rows deep at 10 PM when Billy Iuso starts his opening set, prompting him to crack a few jokes about the situation. Better enjoy the twirling space while it lasts! Billy puts on a fine set, but as it moves on towards 11 PM, it gets harder and harder to hear him over the yapping crowd. Oh well!

As we wait for the Rads, the crowd has filled in pretty well, and the scene up front seems about the same as the other nights: it's tight, but most everyone has room to shake their bones. I'm really glad that we were able to join the party this year: it's great to visit some of the same old places and share new good times with old friends!

The first set is pretty solid, and offers enough to hit my buttons that I won't complain about the selections from my 'take it or leave it' list. I'm happy that the guys are holding up and delivering the goods on night three! I think it helps Frankie to have Mike Skinkus up there adding to the rhythmic pulse. Reggie seems to be running just a little slower tonight than yesterday. I'm glad to report that he appears to be in much better health now, standing up to play all night. I wouldn't grudge him a seat if he wanted one, but none is there onstage: that tells me it wasn't even a consideration: Reg must feel like a rockin' Getuplican!

Set two starts with a guest appearance by Glenn Sears. He's clearly having mobility issues, but seems charged up for his star turn covering Leon Russell's Out in the Woods – how's that for a shout out to the early 80's? The rest of the set is a real hoot-and-a-half. The band may be losing a bit of their groove super-powers as the years run by, but how many folks in the 70+ club are ready to lay it down like that for you? Long live the New Orleans Radiators!
