Notes

An early start this morning meant we got a great spot in Marx Meadow, roughly located in the center sweet spot of the PA blast. Many of the folks around us were repeat offenders from prior years, and it was fun having time to catch up with them on all that had happened since last year's fest. The weather was just exactly perfect while we were in the morning shade, but eventually the sun angle increased enough to flood us with bright radiation, and after a few minutes on broil, it became obvious that shade-seeking behavior was required. For me, this meant heading up to the still-uncrowded rail, where I could stand on cool camp grass and lean into the shade of the stage until 11 or so. Because I fled for shadier ground at that point, I missed the Red Dirt Boys soundcheck. Or rather, I heard it, but I didn't have my notebook with me, so nothing got written down. I recall that Will led them through one blistering blues-rock jam, but I don't remember that having any vocal component. And then lots of fragments of tunes as things got set up on stage. Maybe someone else will share better notes about what happened then.

Soon enough it was time to rock, and after greetings from Chuck Poling, the Red Dirt Boys treated us to four rollicking tunes: a terrific way to start the day! Both of Phil Madeira's tunes featured wry lyrics: listening to him sing made me think that he'd be a ball to hang out with at a party. Hopefully the Red Dirt Boys will get a longer set assignment next time they're on the HSB bill!
