Excited about today's show with Shinyribs, I arrive at Hopmonk about 3:45 – early enough to beat the rush for a front of the line spot, yeah! I put my chair down right after Phil & Peggy Jaret, then see that Amy Zeno is already planted near the front: it's great to be around friends! The wait for door time passes relatively quickly, with my only complaint being the full melt period we spend standing in the sun just prior to opening the house. It's funny to think that I was worrying about not being prepared for fog on the drive over: it's at least 90 F here in Novato this afternoon.
Forever Goldrush finishes their opening set after ~ 45 minutes, and by 6:55 PM in set break the sun has finally dropped low enough to put me in full shade: whew! I made it without melting down! Phil Jaret seemed pretty psyched about the opener, but they didn't really do it for me… Not bad, but not distinctive enough in any way that I could latch on to. I'm sure there's a good story behind the chicken bone art pieces placed on pedestals at the outside edges of the stage. Maybe next time Damon will take time to tell us?
The crowd has filled in quite a bit by 7:15 PM, but it's clearly not a sellout: I guess folks don't realize what they're going to miss! What with the pandemic and competition from other acts, it's been six years since I've seen Shinyribs, and I'm very excited to remedy that lapse!
The show blasts off with Red Quasar, and just like that, I'm reminded of everything that grabbed me on seeing them in 2018: a driving band with a funky horn section and backup singers, and a shamanic leader in the strangely charismatic Kevin Russell. I should have tried harder to capture some of his dances and poses: too late for that now!
Anyways, the band played a hugely satisfying set, and I look forward to seeing them again soon!

Whoa! This section is incomplete for now, sorry!
