Overall, I was really pleased with this show, despite the numerous hassles (ticket-buying expereince, insane pricing, entrance to the venue, seating): when you get right down to it, what matters is the listening experience, right?
Continuing with the criticism, I didn't mind the dissolution of the jam at the end of St. Stephen before they launched Shakedown – it's a reasonable substitute for a proper segue – but using that same weird trick at the end of Shakedown was cheap. I know the guys are capable of better, and it bothers me to hear them repeatedly take the lazy way out.
On the other hand, I'll offer that I'd have rather heard that same dissolution segue in Set Two as a means of transition to El Paso than what we got: Bob abruptly taking off his electric, picking up the acoustic, and then strumming absent-mindedly as if that would smooth the way into El Paso: nope! Another cheap ploy revealed for what it was. Obviously, there's no pleasing me!
With a full stop at the end of El Paso, it was a surprise and a treat when Mayer started playing Sing Me Back Home: two cowboy tunes in a row!
The segue from Cumberland Blues into Death Don't Have No Mercy was more of an abrupt left turn than the smooth slide that I'm listening for. I suppose I might upgrade it to a regular double-guillemet once I get a chance to re-listen. The single chevron is there as my feeling in the moment was “damn, that was a bumpy ride!”
At the end of set two, no one actually left the stage, and the pause between the end of Sugar Magnolia and the start of Ripple was quite short: not more than a minute.
With the show over, we suffered the crowds again (why can't they open all the frigggin' exit gates once the show is over?), then speed-walked back to our parking spot off Garcia about a mile away. I'm not always psyched for a post-show walk, but it generally beats being stuck in parking lot traffic!
Big thanks to Ting for the photo gallery!
Whoa! This section is incomplete for now, sorry!
