Ready to go 10 minutes early. Let's get it on folks!
I was really surprised to learn earlier this morning that Joshua Tillman was going to be playing a solo set instead of with a full band. I guess the pandemic might have led him to disband his group, and today was an experiment to see how things might work as a solo performer.
I was really impressed with the large cadre of devoted fans ready to mouth-along (or sing, in some cases) to each and every song. I was also really happy that they weren't so fanatical as to be pressing forward to crush us on the rail, and I think their support helped Tillman feel a bit more confident about this gig: his first of the post-pandemic era, and possibly first solo gig as well.
He's obviously a clever guy, and his banter was generally pretty witty: the sort of person who can't help spilling a stream of consciousness rap that's interesting rather than banal. Worked for me!
William Wayland posted a review and picture gallery on the Bay Bridged, which shut down shortly thereafter at the end of September. Sad!
Joshua Zucker posted a review of the fest with the SF Chronicle.
Big thanks to Ting for the photo gallery!
Whoa! This section is incomplete for now, sorry!
