It was a treat and a surprise to see Bob Weir walk in with his guitar, just as the festivities were getting underway this afternoon. I'd heard the rumor, but noting that Bob's regular rig was absent, I figured that it was just wishful thinking. Boy, was I happy to be proved wrong!

The setlist as originally planned



Weir's appearance must not have been 100% planned, since the band deviated somewhat from the original setlist, pulling Stephen from it's late-show-melt-down slot to become the opener. No doubt, this contributed mightily to the hysteria that swept over the assembled crowd: laughter, cheers, many many cell phones out… it was interesting to observe the reaction. I played my part by hopping up and down like a dancing fool.

When Bob took off his guitar and headed off stage, it was easy to hear Phil say “he'll be back” – more than once – but as it turns out, Bob's return will be another day, as he split about half-way through the next tune. Bummer!

Jackie Greene wasted no time in filling the empty slot at the tip of the psychedelic spear, delivering a mighty rendition of Wharf Rat that ended with a couple minutes very deliberate tease of Dark Star. We stop just a moment to catch breath, and then blast off once again with an energetic take on Midnight Hour. Lots of fun, even if not temporally appropriate for the current timezone (this one's for anyone listening in the Azores Islands?).

Lovelight was terrific fun, and Jackie put a lot of heart into his singing today: I bet he got a kick out of playing to a crowd after the pandemic-mandated break in group activities. The transition from Lovelight into Not Fade Away seemed to me to be a little rough, but my guess is that's simply the result of one or more of the guys tagging along slightly later than the principals leading the charge. Or maybe one of the principals yanked the steering wheel a little too hard, and we caught a bit of curb while making that right turn. At least the bus kept rolling!
