Notes

We arrive way early today and waste more time than usual waiting in line. Soundcheck happens, but for one reason or another, nothing is intelligible: it happens, but too murky to make out any tunes.

The band's rendition of the Terrapin Station suite featured an unusual vocal arrangement tonight. During the opening segment, Lady with a Fan, Grahame and Phil alternated lines. For the concluding Terrapin Station section, Phil opened by singing solo, but things then switched to three part harmony with the addition of Stu. It was certainly different! Can't say that I'm totally sold on the alternate arrangement, but I really appreciate that the musicians are interested in trying to shake things up with new ideas – how does the song go?

Space was quite interesting – lots of good trippy sounds zinging back and forth between the speakers. I was baffled a little when Holly first began playing Brent's lullaby: too way more than five notes for me to name that tune tonight – not having previewed the setlist in advance, it made for a nice surprise to hear that song again!

Of course, the same can be said for the encore: it's a shame that the Beatles side of the Grateful Dead repertoire send to get the short shift by most of the cover bands at work these days. Stu totally killed it with his vocal delivery – and made the tune seem timely and current.
