Notes

Ting and I arrived exactly on time (after a massively time-wasting clusterf#@k in Point Richmond around Westbound 580), only to get turned away at the door – too early, start-time revised! – so we walked back across the street and sat in the car awhile as the Del Mars finished soundcheck and the other early birds snatched up all the seating.

As the Del Mars were playing when we walked in, I decided to bail on setlist duty – it's OK to blow off a shift now and then, right?! – and leave the job to Bob Cogswell working after-the-fact with his multi-track archival recording.

The Ashkenaz crew set up another 20 or 30 folding chairs on house right during the opening set – all the better to accommodate the folks who continued to trickle in – but Ting and I danced, or flitted about to visit during the breaks between tunes.

Chef Jeff and his crew got hors d'oeuvres set out during the break between bands, and we enjoyed noshing while yacking and laughing. Our eating ended about the same time that Shakey Zimmerman began, and from that point on it was time to dance. Fully electric today, and loud. A fun set! I don't recall hearing them cover Scenery before – it was nice to have at least one tune that wasn't a well-trotted old war horse in today's repertoire.

The main course is set out during Forever Young, and breaking protocol, we jump in line to get dinner before we leave. Show up at a Chef Jeff event and skip dinner? No Way! I exhibit my best self control and refrain from piling the plate high. Just a taste of most of the dishes. Sure wish we'd had time to stick around for the full feast, but today is one of those over-planned days, so we gotta dash!

We zoom out of Ashkenaz while most folks are eating and the musicians of Shakey Zimmerman begin to break down their gear for the set change. Gotta go, gotta go, gotta go! Where? We're off to see Mike Dillon's NOLAtet in the Henderson Lab at SFJAZZ….
