Since you're wondering, Timothy is Sarah's father.
Between the usual work distractions, commute-time traffic and BART hassles, I was lucky to arrive at Herbst by show-time. I think I walked into the entrance lobby at exactly 7:30 PM – bad planning for getting a good seat at a GA show, and yet, as I hustled down the aisle, I noticed that the second row was practically empty. Lucky me! I took off my coat, plopped myself into a seat in the center, and then the house lights dimmed. Yep, cut it a little close tonight!
While looking up at a singer from second row might not give the most flattering view (“my, how jowly you look grandma,” said Little Red Riding Hood), I like that position for delivering a full warm sound from the piano. And without the usual distraction of rustling neighbors, that aspect of the performance was especially sublime: when Sarah wasn't singing, it was quite easy to close my eyes and slide away into piano bliss!
And for the singing? I thought it was top notch! Classical vocal recitals aren't something I devote my attention to often, but when I'm in the right mood, a powerful singer can be riveting. Sarah seemed to enjoy herself, trying on new characters for each song, and adding deliberately theatrical elements to emphasize the lyric turns. Bravo!
