[12:37 AM Riding VTA to Mountain View]
Lots of fun hanging with old pals in Mountain View prior to the show – always good to stand around and shoot the bull over food and drinks!
Riding VTA in to the stadium was relatively easy, if a bit of a long, crowded ride.
We luck out time-wise and walk up to the entry gates just as a surge is passing through. Search me, scan me, let me run to my spot! This being our first visit to the venue, we take a less than optimal route: up to the concourse, then back down to field-level before racing over to the front-center section of the non-pit GA. Hooray! 5:15 and we're in! After a few hectic minutes looking for our scouts, we locate tonight's spot, as well as throwing out blankets to grab additional space for the lolly-gaggers.
Time passes pleasantly as we chat with old comrades and make friends with our neighbors – looks like everyone's aiming for a good time tonight. The band rewards us with a loose and rambling set of old favorites – the newest tune being 1970's hit, Truckin'. And to top it off, the end-of-set rain sprinkling from the sky is accompanied by a very cool purple-heavy rainbow. Cosmic!
The second set delved deeply into the weird spaces of early Grateful Dead repertoire - huzzah, huzzah, huzzah! And for the most part, the crowd goes with it – happily dancing along with band – wiggling, twitching, writhing and spinning as broken arpeggios and suspended chords ring out into the night. Well done lads!
The gig winds up right at midnight, and then begins our transport hell … almost 40 minutes to make it onto a VTA car headed west to Mountain View, then a long, very crowded ride to the end of the line. It was quite strange to hop off the VTA after 1 in the morning and find that CalTrain was holding the last run of the night for folks who were headed north up the peninsula – good for them!! We walked back to the Dispoto's house for a bit of post-show partying, then decided around 2 AM that it was time to hit the road – which we did, running first up to Glen Park (in fairly heavy traffic on 101!), then on over to Oakland. Wow. What a day! Didn't get to bed until after 3:30 AM – and I'm supposed to do this all again tomorrow? Help!
