Performed as a single set suite, tonight's presentation of Terence Blanchard's masterpiece, A Tale of God’s Will, was simply stunning. His orchestral writing struck me as very emotive, and the integration of the two groups was excellent, almost as if the suite was conceived of as a Concerto for Jazz Quintet and Orchestra. Makes me think I should make time to watch Spike Lee's 2006 documentary, When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts, that served as the impetus for Blanchard to write the original score that was adapted into tonight's entertainment.
