Yellowjackets

• Russell Ferrante: keyboards;

I suppose my primary criticism of tonight's gig is that on the whole, the band's sound was just too nice – it lacked the blues or grit that I think of as an essential component to most jazz/funk/R&B tunes. Doesn't mean I didn't like it, but like white bread, there's only so much you can take before you want something different.

Bob Mintzer started out doing a good bit introducing the tunes, but I guess he got a little distracted midway through the set, and just gave up. Not having followed the band, I can't say anything about what I might have heard, though the audience greeted a few of the tunes with applause, so presumably some of the choices were selected from their hits!
