[7:54 PM Phil out to noodle, off at 7:59 PM]
[8:08 PM lights down, same band as Tuesday except Scott Padden at the keyboards instead of Jason Crosby]
Interesting tonight to see that the pre-show is even mellower than Tuesday. Folks must be stuck on the highway or something. Strange also to see that two trap sets are set up; guess Alex and Jordan got tired of messing with the minimalist setup for the second drummer.
Several of the core tunes were presented in radically reworked versions. Jack-a-Roe was played at a fast tempo – rather like recent iterations of Cumberland Blues, and Ross' delivery was more sprachsang than singspiel (something Ting really didn't like).
The opening jam before Eyes (Erik Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1 according to the printed set list) sounded a lot like a mutation of the great Eyes jams of 1974. Very interesting! Easily my favorite section of the set, though Shakedown on 9th St comes in as a strong second – thoroughly rockin', that one!!
Closing the show with NFA and encoring Bird Song was also nice – good to get back to the core repertoire after trying out so many newish pieces earlier in the night. All in all, quite satisfactory for a Friday night!
After taking about ten minutes for hellos, chit-chat, and goodbyes in the Grate Room, we headed over to join the rest of the crowd for Walking Spanish in the bar. I was distracted for a good 20 minutes or so with hellos and buying tix to other shows (6/27 and 7/11) newly added to the schedule, so I didn't try keeping a setlist for this part of the night.
After grabbing a beer, it was time for vegging on the stairs while the young 'uns danced and shook their bones. They played a pretty nice Shakedown (“by request”, says Alex), followed by I'm Only Sleeping – quite an interesting juxtaposition! Last tune of the night was a surprisingly mellow version of the Mother Hips White Headphones, which I sort of mis-remembered (from Jackie Greene's recent show at the Fox), but attributed incorrectly to Chuck Prophet … thank God I have the internet available through my smartphone! Got that one fixed up before the tune was even half over!!
