[7:05 PM lights down, long introduction by Angela Hewitt demoing various key ideas from the work]
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750): The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080
I really appreciated Angela's pre-performance lecture, for lengthy as it was, it gave me a very helpful “listener map” for keeping my place within the work.
It was interesting comparing my recollections of various other performances – Davitt Moroney's harpsichord; the Emerson String Quartet, the New Century Chamber Orchestra and so on – against tonight's rendition by piano. And while I certainly enjoyed the clarity of presentation brought by Angela (and the Steinway grand), I think my favorite is still Moroney's gig. Nonetheless, I'm darn certain that I'll be seeing Angela Hewitt again.
