First off, major props to sallygr for setlist verification – it eases my mind to know that I've got that information straight!
Saturday afternoon in the park with tens of thousands of friends, listening to master musicians pay tribute to the ancestors. Pretty hard to top that, eh? What with the rotation of players in and out, it's entirely possible that I messed up on a few of the details, but I did my best to keep an eye on the proceedings so as to share this information with the interested reader.
How was it? Why splendid, of course! Just look at that list of songs and performers – how could it be anything less than terrific? Happily, there were no major clusterplucks to derail the jams, and all of the star performers seemed well-prepared for their turn in the spotlight.
My favorites from the set were Darrel Scott's turn on the spiritual, I Am a Pilgrim, Jim Lauderdale's cover of the Race is On (a tribute to George Jones, who passed in April), and Steve Earle's rendition of Freeborn Man (dunno who that was for; the composer, Jimmy Martin – here's an iteration from 2008, passed away in 2005; After some quick research, I'm gonna go with Earl Scruggs, since Jimmy was in the Flatt-Scruggs band for a while, and Earl passed in 2012). Not quite as rocked out as the psychedelic country-tonk Junior Brown version – here's another one from 2008 – but the band today was definitely cooking with white gas on that one!
