Rag Bhopali
[~9:45 PM Lights down; tuning; 9:51 PM Introductory Remarks and band introduction from Ravi]
Rag Pilu AKA Rangeena Pilu, to be performed in semiclassical style (one thing after another … whatever comes to mind)
Like usual, Ravi did a fine job introducing the pieces to us rubes, but I've undoubtedly mangled the names and descriptions. Let me know if you can offer any help with corrections!
Karan Mahajan posted a brief review of the show in the Stanford Daily; unfortunately, she seems to have heard slightly different titles than I did!
The group came to a full stop in the middle of Rag Pilu, but I consider it a dramatic device, rather than an indicator of a particular change to be noted. If anything, it marks a change between highlighting Bose to highlighting Chattopadhyay, but heck if I can remember who was playing first. Another stop occurs after the second drum ‘solo’, and then it’s off to the races as Ravi and Anoushka trade runs lickety split until the conclusion of the work.
