Ugh! You can imagine how happy we were to stumble out of the car and onto the hilltop greenery of Sunset Stage! We thought we were arriving late, but it turns out that other folks trickled in even more slowly. The show didn't get started until nearly an hour later, as the sun was dropping behind the westward ridge, and the temperature dropped quickly while the late afternoon breeze whipped away whatever warm air was around. The calendar says it ain't fall yet, but the evening air would beg to differ if it had a voice! And hues of yellow and gold among the green foliage would make for a supporting vote from the plants... _Not Fade Away_ was a great opener for today's show: everyone was up and dancing right away: perfect for generating a bit of heat against the chilly breeze. Rather than wrapping up the tune, they jammed it out, and after a few teases, segued seamlessly into an up-tempo rendition of _Red Rocking Chair_. With _Valerie_ being another rocker, the unspoken message was clear: it's a dance party tonight! Sean Feder & Rita Hoskings joined Painted Mandolin for the next four tunes, alternating originals sung by Rita with classic covers led by Sean: fun stuff! If we lived nearby, Saturday's Ugly Mug show would certainly have been on our calendar! Painted Mandolin continued the party by ripping through their mashup of the _That's It for the Other One_ suite with _Cosmic Charlie_, then closing the first set with _Reuben & Cerise_. Whew! Time to rest my bones awhile! Towards the end of set break, JC leads the crowd assembled in the kitchen in an extended version of the Happy Birthday song for Tom, with MH accompanying on guitjo. The party continued through set two, and happily, without the sunset breeze, the temperature seemed to be warmer than it was during the first set. I'm not a big Phish fan, but _Sand_ was really fun, and Dan's lead bass on _Boogie on Reggae Woman_ really took that cover over the top! I was pretty sure that the band was going to play _Truckin'_ after _Brid Dreams_ -- the insistent intro riff is pretty hard to miss -- but I guess that was a fakeout, and they ended up playing _New Speedway Boogie_, punctuated by interludes reminiscent of _Spanish jam_ in-between the verses. As the outro jam bent towards the chunka-chunk Bo Diddley beat of _Not Fade Away), it became apparent that tonight's circle was nearly complete, and party time was almost over. _Forever Young_ was a great way to wrap things up, and more than a few folks were belting along our felicitations to Tom during the choruses. Twenty minutes later we'd made it down the hill to our car, and soon we were zooming off through the valleys: homeward bound! Traffic was much much lighter by now, and except for a few scattered moments of frustration (slowpokes, bumbaclots, and an utterly unexpected detour -- curse you CALTRANS, for failing to warn us of a critical exit closure!), the drive home was pretty pleasant for a Friday night! ## Photos Big thanks to Ting for the photo gallery! **Whoa!** This section is incomplete for now, sorry! Back to the previous event! ☸ Up to the 2024 yearbox! ☸ Up to the 2024 event list! ☸ On to the next event!
