Anders, Phil & Jill watching with us from the lip of the stage; 11:54 PM the float – a boat – appears, Emily Sunderland aboard as baby New Year, dressed in a white night gown; 11:57 PM PA cuts to Ship of Fools (the album version, which cuts after a minute or twoo back to orchestral countdown music); 11:58 PM And the float is a go! … 11:59 PM Father Time (Bill Walton) comes out on stage, float arrives, led by Robbie, dressed as a terrapin; JC as jester leads the countdown; HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! lots of kissing and hugging and general merriment while the band takes the stage and kicks off the first set of 2014.]

Whoa! This section is incomplete for now, sorry!
We leave the house a little after four, hit light traffic in the maze heading on up to the 80-580 split, but then cruise the rest of the way west. Arriving around five, the scene is remarkably mellow for the next hour or two, and while my preshow butterflies gradually dissipate (floating away with the dropping temperature), the crowd energy rises: there is a definite buzz in the air, as there should be, 'cuz it's NEW YEAR'S EVE BABY! Compared to past years' bad weather, tonight's wait is a piece of cake – a little chilly, but nothing unbearable.
