Eric was going to leave
the Tumbleweed Redwood City office to work in the Japan office, so I wanted
to have lunch with him before he took off. Keith came along too. Both Eric
and Keith have UNIX systems administration skills, so they sometimes
back my group up when we are short-handed in that skillset
(usually when I am on vacation). Eric was going to work in Japan, so he could
keep working at Tumbleweed without having to deal with some of the conflicts
in the corporate office. It was a smart move given how much he had invested
in the company. To our surprise, Keith told us that he was also giving notice
to leave. He did not have a job lined up yet, but I guess he really needed
a break. Keith is in Professional Services, so his stress level is much higher
than ours in IT as he had to deal with customers (who are always right even
when they are wrong). I sympathize with him! While IT is not exactly stress-free,
at least all our "customers" are internal and (most of the time) more reasonable.
Of course, with both Keith and Eric leaving, that means we would have to
make do when we are short-handed in UNIX -- I guess Jones will have to hire
a consultant whenever I go on vacation! Maybe he will appreciate me more!!
:-)
On the way out of the restaurant, I stopped to take pictures of some of the
pretty flowers lining the sidewalk. Ah! Spring in California! :-)
