After work we drove up to San Francisco for tonight's entertainment: a rare solo piano recital by the amazing Geri Allen, to be held at Florence Gould Theatre at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, as part of the San Francisco Jazz Festival Spring Series.

For some strange reason, Friday night traffic headed towards San Francisco was unusually light, and we ended up arriving at the venue quite early. After lingering outside to appreciate the sunset, we entered the museum to find that a premiere was taking place for a collection of early 21st Century European graphic art pieces.

The place was packed with folks. Some stood in groups discussing the art on display. Others hovered hungrily over the hors d'ouvres tables, and still others were captivated by the wandering minstrels such as Claudette, who strolled the gallery playing cheery cafe tunes, attired in early 21st century Parisian street fashion.

Eventually it was time for the show, so we took our seats and sat back while Geri Allen wove her magical musical spells. Though the show was a little short - just under an hour, including the encore, but it was great. I'd love to see her put together a run of solo shows at Yoshi's sometime.
