The Taekwondo program at Oracle is branched off of the UCMAP Taekwondo program, but it lacks many of the amenities and luxuries that we have taken for granted. Besides the very material items like the availability of kick bags, mats, and large kick pads (ideal for back kicks), they also do not have easy access to the diverse set of martial arts that is offered at UCMAP.

The idea of the workshops has brewed in my mind for a while. A normal class at Oracle lasts about 1-1/2 hours. Warmups can take close to 1/2 hour which leaves an hour to do everything else. It occurs to me that students would benefit from workshops which concentrate on one area for the entire class to help them learn each emphasis better without distractions.

The Self-Defense Seminar is the first of these workshops. I talked to Lisa about it first since I carpool with her regularly to work. Lisa is a first-degree black-belt in Hankido. From the UCMAP brochure, Hankido is described as follow:
Hankido is the Korean way of barehanded training in self-defense. It combines the martial arts of Hapkido, Taekwondo, Judo, and others to develop a method of self-defense through physical, psychological, and mental training.
No one is more qualified to teach self-defense than a Hankido black-belt. I can always depend on Lisa to be super-helpful! She emailed other instructors in the area about helping out and James, Rick, and Ryan agreed. Even though Ryan had a broken foot and Lisa hurt herself just the week before, they were all there for the workshop in full force!

Lisa and James did most of the demonstrations while Rick, Ryan, and I went around helping people. The workshop covered very basic wrist techniques as well as some footwork and leg defenses. The hour and a half went by quickly. The first workshop was a success!
